A good sequel to King's Dragon. Starts to answer a lot of the questions raised in the first book - in particular, I loved finding out more about the Eika. The world building in these books is great and it's very cool to go along on the journey with the characters to try to figure out how this world works.

This is a wonderful teen to adult fantasy book that follows Kate Elliot's The King's Dragons. Although some of the characters make despicable choices as to how they behave, the plot is gripping and well balanced by the multiple view points. All of the feelings the characters have toward each other, even the love triangle, make sense. The conscience of the Fifth Son, as well as his willingness to learn about the cultures of those he view soft, make his people, the Eika, into more than just monsters. Alain's choices are difficult as he learns more about the strengths and weaknesses of his old father and his new one. Although I do not understand Liath's actions toward Hugh, I do understand why should would be as afraid toward him as she is. And Saglant faces his captivity well. The parts combine to form a very fast-paced book.
