Lt. Terence McDonagh is a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is to scoring drugs while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves and together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience.

Nick Cage used to make pretty good movies. As time goes on they get worse and worse. This was pretty bad.

One of the world's greatest living directors paired with one of Holly'wood's most infamous oddballs? The result is as strange and surreal as the description makes you think it ought to be. The result is a movie that always seems in danger of flying off the rails, but manages to succeed in spite of itself. This film flies in the face of conventional film making logic and I suspect that many people will not like it. But hey, "Shoot him again... ... his soul is still dancing."

The movie had some good parts but it could have been much better.

This movie was a disappointment. I actually rented it for Eva Mendes and she was barely in it and when she was her character was kind of annoying. Besides that, the movie was lame and quickly became pretty unrealistic when it came to Nicolas Cage character. I really wanted to turn it off but I said finish it just to see the ending which unsurprisingly sucked.

Though it shares a title and some basic ideas (cop corruption, drugs and violence), this is hardly a remake of Abel Ferrara's guilt-ridden crime film of 1992 starring Harvey Keitel. Director/madman Werner Herzog claimed he'd never seen it or heard of Ferrara, but that could've been a stunt. The questions with a movie like this is does it know what it's doing or is it really just bad? It walks a fine line, although when the iguanas show up, you'll probably think that the whole movie is just a sick, fever dream joke, anchored by a gonzo, go for broke performance by Nic Cage. The story doesn't really make much sense and it's disappointing if you're a fan of Herzog, but it has it's share of batpoop crazy moments and a decent supporting cast, including Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Brad Dourif, Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham, who looks like a young Michael Douglas. It ends with the immortal question "Do fish dream?"

This movie is garbage. In the first 25 minutes the movie lost all credibility. I watched for another 30 minutes and then couldn’t take it anymore. Not a huge fan of Nicholas Cage, but he has made some decent movies in the past and this is definitely not one of them. Give this one a huge pass.

The Bad Lieutenant - Port of Call: New Orleans ---- (DVD - 2010) ---- Very strong content and well played ---- The Lieutenant is Addicted to drugs ---- Played by Nicolas Cage he is, in his roll, a very foul leader of crimes in order to lead this chosen path. This movie is not a good choice for a youth to watch. ---- You may not finish this movie yourself ! ---- RichardPaul (finished 10/18/13)

The old tax dodger was OK here, his concubine believable and it looked like New Orleans was the den of iniquity that Katrina embellished it to be even more than it had been

Cage was excellent in his role.

It was O.K for a home TV movie. I was entertained and interesting. But it was NOT worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.
