A well-to-do Bucharest architect is determined to keep her deadbeat son out of jail after a deadly car crash. How far will she go to convince the police, eyewitnesses, and even the victim's family that her son was not recklessly speeding? A spellbinding drama of social commentary and psychological realism, this caustic look into the corrupt heart of the Eastern European bourgeoisie twists into a brilliantly ambiguous study of obsessive motherly love.

The nasty, little user below, akirakato has recently sent me a private hate message, and it goes like this....

(*quote*) "Hey! How come you've jotted down here my comment from "Dolphin Tale"? Are you stupid or what? An idiot? Insane? Just simply foolish or just kidding? What the heck do you think you have done such a bloody out-of-mind act?"

So - Go ahead and read my "Dolphin Tale" comment and if you can figure out WTF!? this nasty girl (who's always writing spoilers) is talking about I'd sure like to hear about it.

Directed by Călin Peter Netzer in 2013, this Romanian drama depicts the obsessive motherly love over her deadbeat son who caused a deadly car crash.
Although the premise appears quite interesting, the film seems so slow-paced that I couldn't finish the film.
It's so boring and contains so many uninteresting and unrelated scenes.
I almost fell into sleep.

Mommy uses all her connections and powers to prevent her adult son from taking responsibility for his actions, saving him from prison while manipulating the family that has suffered his injury.

I couldn't finish watching it because it was making me angry that she expected to get whatever she wanted...which Im assuming was her son to be free & found innocent of all charges.Makes me ill to know there are people out there that think like her.
Just really hit home for me I guess. The haves & have-nots situation. Maybe I will try it again sometime when Im feeling less vulnerable.

Filmed without a musical score and using mainly handheld cameras, Netzer’s bitter pill of a movie works on more than one level—it’s no accident that Cornelia’s privileged urban lifestyle contrasts so sharply with the impoverished rural reality of the victim’s relatives (she drives up to the police station decked out in furs while the boy’s enraged uncle sports a worn cloth coat) or that the only witness to what really happened comes with a convenient price tag. Furthermore, Cornelia’s inability to cope when confronted with someone else's grief speaks not only of her own personal disconnect but of a greater social malaise. A sad and unrelenting tale which slowly builds to its shattering climax. This is what the art of cinema is all about.

This is an sweetened impression of the Romanian society and most of the western viewers have the impression it might be "an event". Most of the time is the NORM, people getting away breaking the law just because they have the connections. Media is one of the factors when sometimes justice is reached.

Honestly speaking, I picked up this DVD based on my impression of another Romanian masterpiece (4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days). The movie is good and worth to be seen, yet it is a bit predictable. It relies heavily on spoken words to reflect emotions and relationships, instead of subtle cinematic tools.

When the film first started the use of a hand-held camera and the very talky scenes were about to turn me off. I persisted and wound up watching a very good drama with strong acting and character development. A glimpse into the upper-middle class of modern day Romania is also a bonus for me. Subtitles.

As usual in this type of film, everything is mommy's fault, even when her son turns out a whiny putz. I had to watch this film with the sound off, for reasons I won't bore you with. It may have enhanced my experience -- and this despite the heroine being a designer of opera sets. It made me concentrate on how flickering shades of expression contradict words, and look for a deeper meaning. Luminita Georghui is the magnificent but slightly tacky mamma grizzly.

The accident:

Mother of man: Your child wasn't meant to die, and my child didn't mean to do harm.
Mother of boy: lf only he were to come in through that door now, l'd ask him, my boy, what were you thinking, crossing the freeway? At least if the driver hadn't been that fast,it wouldn't have happened. Or if he'd driven faster, they wouldn't have collided.
...
Mother of man: He didn't mean it. Forgive him. He's gota good heart, my child. He's warm-hearted. He's generous. He never liked to boast, he didn't brag about his things. Very shy. He didn't join gangs. He doesn't drink. We're so proud of him! He's my whole life. ... You have another child, but l only have him ...
